Planning a low fat diet

Low Fat Diets
A low fat diet can help you get healthier or lose weight. You need some time and energy to make your own new healthy shopping and cooking plans.

Having meals at home

  • The daily fat intake should represent 30% of the total calories consumed.
    For instance, a diet with 2,000 calories should have 600 calories resulting from fat. The fat intake per day should be 66.6 g.
  • It’s advisable to have 6-11 servings of whole grains per day, such as whole wheat breads, pastas, brown rice or oatmeal.
  • You should have 2-3 servings of diary products per day, such as fat free yogurt, skim milk or low fat cheese.
  • Have 2-4 servings of fruit daily, such as a banana, an apple, a pear or dried fruits.
  • Have 3-5 servings of vegetables each day. You can have 1 cup of raw or 1/2 cup of cooked vegetables for one serving.
  • Have 2-3 servings of lean protein each day, such as turkey, fish, low-fat beef.

Having meals at restaurants

  • Have a salad with a low fat dressing. You can choose to customize your dinner according to your low fat diet.
  • You can order the dishes that are labeled as heart-healthy on the menu. Usually these are suitable for a low fat diet.
  • Order baked , broiled, steamed or roasted entrees.
