Finding low fat foods

Low Fat Diets
It’s important to learn about the difference between fats, such as saturated fats, unsaturated fats, trans-fats, good fats and bad fats, in order to be able to find the low fat foods. The information on the labels can be quite confusing. Find bellow some tips for finding the low fat foods.

Directions
About the bad fats

  • Stay away from saturated fats and trans-fats. The former are obtained from animal sources, such as meat and diary. Eat low fat meats, such as chicken, turkey and fish and have low fat milk and cheese and other similar products made from skim milk.
  • Always remove the visible fat from the meat before cooking it. When you remove the fat after the meat is cooked, the food is not considered to be low in fat.
  • Stay away from trans-fats, such as margarine. Trans-fats are made so that they remain solid at room temperature and they are usually used for frying and baking. if you are on a low fat diet avoid fried or baked food.

About the good fats

  • Eat omega fats that can be found in salmon. Even if omega fat is not a low fat, it is healthy.
  • When you fry foods use vegetable oil in moderation. These fats are much healthier than trans-fats.
  • For cooking use olive oil.

Tips about low fat foods

  • Always read the nutrition label before buying food. Pay attention to the DV of fats percentage, DV means the recommended daily value. If the total fat content DV (saturated and unsaturated) is under 5, than the food is considered to be low fat.
  • Purchase the foods that claim on the front of the package that are low fat products. always check the information on the label.
  • It’s advisable to replace low fat and reduced fat, therefore, instead of buying a cream soup, buy a broth soup, instead of tuna packed in oil, have tuna packed in water.
