Preventing infertility

Infertility can be caused by genetics, but there are many other factors that can affect your potential fertility, such as various substances that we are eating, the air that we breathe or the stress. You can prevent infertility by learning what can compromise your fertility and how to avoid such hazards.

What to do: make a list with the workplace hazards and have regular check-ups.

  1. Analyze your lifestyle. Habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol, or high stress and not sleeping consistently, badly affects your fertility.
  2. Find out which are the environmental hazards in your workplace. According to the law, you have the right to know if you are exposed to chemicals which can affect your fertility,  or may cause birth defects or other health issues.
  3. Keep a constant weight by keeping a healthy diet and by exercising consistently. Avoid gaining weight as obesity is considered to be an infertility factor. In men, obesity lowers the sperm count due to overheating, while in female it suppresses the ovulation.
  4. Have a check-up each year. Finding out early diagnosis, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical cancer or endometriosism, can help you preventing infertility.
  5. Educate yourself about your body and the reproductive cycle. Read books, such as “Taking Charge of Your Fertility, tenth Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health” by Toni Weschlerto have an in-depth look.
